Dr. Maki has worked in medical oncology and developmental chemotherapeutics for over 30 years, with cancer research experience for over 35 years. He worked on the molecular basis of tumor-specific cancer vaccines under Drs. Lloyd Old and Pramod Srivastava at Cornell / MSKCC. He then completed residency at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and fellowship at Dana-Farber, where he examined antigen presentation with Kenneth Rock and CD4 immunity in tumor models with Abul Abbas before being made an instructor in 1998. He moved Sloan-Kettering in 1999 and developed the adult sarcoma medical oncology program. He moved to Mt Sinai New York in 2013, where he was chief of pediatric hematology-oncology and subsequently led their Cancer Clinical Trials Office. Thereafter he moved to Northwell and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 2016, serving as chief scientific officer for the Cancer Center and medical director of the Cancer Clinical Trials office. He moved to University of Pennsylvania in 2019, where led the sarcoma medical oncology and clinical phase 1 programs before returning to New York in 2023, working again at Memorial Hospital on the soft tissue sarcoma and experimental therapeutics services. He maintains long term interests in the biology of sarcomas, in clinical trial design and new drug development in search of new anti-cancer targets.
