Michiel van de Sande currently works as a professor in (paediatric) Oncological Orthopedic Surgery at the Princes Maxima Center for paediatric oncology in Utrecht and the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) where he surgically treats paediatric, AYA and adult patients with bone and soft tissue tumors. He started in Leiden in 2010 as an Senior Orthopedic Surgeon, immediately after completing his Orthopedic training that was followed by a fellowship in paediatric Orthopedic oncology at the Nuffield Orthopedic Center in Oxford.
His surgical Specialty focusses on the treatment of pediatric, AYA and adult patients with Bone and soft tissue sarcomas and pediatric orthopedics (oncology and limb reconstruction).
Research lines have been set up in recent years which have an international collaborative basis, such as multicenter studies on giant cell tumors of the joint and bone, soft tissue sarcomas, chondrosarcomas, adamantinoma, Osteo- and Ewing Sarcoma and Fluorescence Guided Surgery.
He has published more than 250 peer reviewed papers and book-chapters; His research was funded by several scientific grants; e.g. the Dutch Cancer Fund (KWF), Alpe-D’huZes, Bontius Stichting and Team Westland.
