Daniel Baumhoer is a consultant pathologist working at the University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland. He graduated from medical school in Göttingen, Germany, in 2003, did his residency in Basel, Switzerland, and passed the final board exam in pathology in 2009. After a research fellowship in Munich, Germany, he returned to Basel and focused his diagnostic and scientific interest on bone tumor pathology. In 2014 he became the head of the Bone Tumor Reference Center (BTRC) of Switzerland (founded in 1972) that currently receives roughly 1000 consultation cases a year for second opinion, mainly from the German-speaking countries in Europe. Prof. Baumhoer is furthermore the project lead for the digital transformation of pathology diagnostics currently ongoing in the University Hospital.
As a main research focus, Prof. Baumhoer is investigating the molecular pathogenesis of bone tumors. He published several research papers in acclaimed scientific journals on the genetic findings underlying osteosarcoma and non-ossifying fibroma. Furthermore, he contributed several chapters on bone tumors as a first author in the current WHO classification on Head&Neck as well as Soft Tissue and Bone Tumors. Prof. Baumhoer published >150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and is the current chair of the working group on bone and soft tissue tumors of the European Society of Pathology.
