Ronnie A. Sebro, M.D., Ph.D., is an internationally renowned statistician, geneticist and musculoskeletal radiologist. His research focuses on using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, tumors and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Focus areas
Applying AI and ML for the evaluation of osteoporosis and osteopenia from imaging data.
Using AI to better classify bone and soft tissue tumors as benign or malignant from imaging studies. These include radiographs, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography with computerized tomography (PET/CT).
Employing AI and radiomics to better evaluate sarcomas.
Leading image-guided clinical trials.
Developing new statistical techniques to ensure fairness, equity and lack of bias — especially including these factors in AI-ML studies.
Significance to patient care
Dr. Sebro's research has allowed for increased opportunistic screening for osteoporosis and osteopenia using CT scans and increased detection of people at risk of fractures. His work in AI and ML has given radiologists greater confidence to differentiate benign from malignant bone lesions using MRI, PET/CT and CT. In Dr. Sebro's studies, AI and ML also have been used to assist pathologists to distinguish benign from malignant soft tissue lesions.
