Clinical bioinformatician
University hospital Basel, Switzerland
Currently in a shared part-time between a research position and an activity of molecular biologist at the institute of pathology and molecular genetics of the university hospital Basel.
From the research side, my work as bioinformatician is supervised by the Prof. Daniel Baumhoer and aims at improving the diagnosis of Bone and soft tissue tumours. Most of our expertise relies on the methylome profiling of these tumours in order to better discriminate them. It sometimes leads to the identification of new subtypes which might be described as new entities in the futur WHO classification. This approach is also a valuable complementary tool for the distinction of complex cases with differential diagnoses, especially if it would lead to different therapeutic procedures for the patient (Osteoblastoma versus Osteosarcoma ; Osteofibrous dysplasia versus Adamantinoma ; chondroblastoma versus clear cell chondrosarcoma)
From the biomedical side, I am integrated in Prof. Matthias Matter and Ilaria Alborelli's team. Our work in molecular pathology consists in the analysis of NGS data (eg: DNA or RNA panel) from patient samples.
The goal is to provide the medical staff with information on potential tumour biomarkers presenting diagnostic , prognostic and/or therapeutic values for the patient.
Both positions show a clear synergic potential. On one hand my research work allows me to be well-informed of recent advances (promising new biomarkers) that can subsequently be used for the analysis of patient data. on the other hand, the broad spectrum of molecular alterations I can see during my duty as biomedical scientist feeds me with new ideas for my research projects.
In the end, this bimodal way of working is pleasant for me and makes me better in my works.
